The garden draws its inspiration from Derek Jarman’s garden in nearby Dungeness. It references the brick paving seen in Lewes and utilises a diagonal line through the garden to heighten perspective and integrate the side return of the house.
Timber sculptures are offset by bright coloured flowers and textured foliage.
The garden plays with perspective using diagonals, and is intended to evoke the local pebble beaches on the south coast with driftwood sculptures and plants set into the gravel.
The decking allows for the seemless transition of levels at the back of the house, merging in with brick paviers which evoke the paving around Lewes. Oak sleepers are used to create the raised bed on the left hand side, rising gradually to form a garden bench. Festoon lighting evokes a seaside atmosphere.
Lemon, pink and white flowers add to the seaside theme.
Sail sculpture set in the shingle and grasses both provide textural contrast with the pebbles.
A tub of ferns outside the kitchen door provides greenery in a dark spot, and accomodates recycling.
Oak sleepers form raised beds, a garden bench, and steps to access the compost bin which is hidden behind the copper-trimmed trellis screen.
